Yolonda (Haiyan), one of the
strongest tropical typhoons has occurred in the Philippines, particularly in
Visayas region. The super typhoon killed innumerable persons and ruined
countless properties. The area is tagged as ghost town due to the devastating
effects of typhoon Yolonda in the totally washed-out areas.
The natural calamity created an avenue
to all Filipinos to show their “BAYANIHAN”, A Filipino tradition which springs
from their hearts in times of emergencies and tragedies. We, Filipinos stretch
our arms to extend our outmost generosity to the helpless victims by offering
financial, moral and other supports which will ease their sufferings. It is in
this situation that we work in unison to build a solid foundation of being
helpful (matulungin) and caring (mapagkalinga), thus we are touching the lives
of the typhoon victims.
On the other hand, typhoon Yolanda was
aggravated by storm surges but not on the heavy downpour. Because of this, the
typhoon is not being associated with climate change. But the occurrence of the
unpredictable weather is associated with climate change which brings dangers
including more powerful storms because of heavy precipitations.
The unpredictable weather condition is
caused by climate change. It has been our crusade to combat global warming and
contribute significantly in taking actions to deter all activities which will
exacerbate our society, our planet earth. We can jumpstart in our own simple
ways to minimize climate change. After all, we are considered losers if we
persist on destroying our mother nature. If we can bring back the natural occurrence
of weather phenomenon, then there will be lesser devastating effects of
typhoons in the locality.
It is true that the other countries
donated relief to the victims of Yolanda which shows cooperation of the people
around the world. But, we should not wait for another Yolanda to remind and
speak to us that we experience disastrous weather because we maltreat our nature.
Typhoon Yolanda and its impacts remind
us that we cannot afford to procrastinate on climate action. We should
contribute viable actions to fight global warming in order to bring back the
good health of our planet earth, our home.
